White

-traditionally called Cape Dutch but term eroded over time
-and Huguenot and to a lesser extent German heritage emphasized
-traditional elites and continue to be richer than others

Jewish

-a lot of refugees and economic migrants who moved to Cape

Bruinen

-aka "brown" people
-coming from several sources
-a lot of them Dutch-speaking from Khoisan backgrounds
-as well as mixed-race from that, East Indies, and from Akan backgrounds

Cape Malay

-Islamic community from bruin background
-associated with Malays due to their leadership but come from slaves, including Khoisan converts, Indians, and indentured servants, especially Javanese

Asian

Cape Javanese

-coming as indentured servants
-largely in west of colony
-as further east they prefer to identify as Malays
-coming from many backgrounds but ultimately the Javanese majority wins the day

Black

-due to weakness relative to neighboring empires they are enfranchised
-and ultimately this becomes permanent

Finkoe

-in OTL we'd call them "Mfengu" or "Fingo"
-people fleeing the Mfecane who became Xhosafied and then transferred allegiance to Dutch
-also converting to Calvinism in the process
-got access to land along coastline as buffer against Xhosa
-successfully take full advantage of commercial boom and become pretty notable
-providing labor recruited from chiefs for rails and the like
-and also becoming small-time entrepreneurs selling wagons and other goods
-migrating all across the Cape Colony
-and a lot of them ultimately speaking Dutch

Asante

-due to Dutch recruitment of soldiers from Asanteman this leads to a lot of Asante soldiers settling in Cape
-most of them to Kaapstad and other large cities
-a lot of them intermarrying either black women or and they become a discrete group
-long term they speak Dutch

Themboe

-in OTL we'd call them Thembu
-got conquered after mineral rushes
-several very costly wars where this is done
-native chiefs remain influential within borders because of Dutch weakness
-and some of them do take advantage of the boom
-despite this very bad relations with white settlers to the area
-ultimately one of the poorer peoples in Cape

Xhosa

-despite many people in Cape speaking Xhosa only a small fraction of them are Xhosa
-because Xhosa continues to have a smaller meaning here
-most of them either close to the border or recent immigrants
-and frequently very poor
